The 1940s Look

posted by critic

The svelte styles of the nineteen forties required a lot of crimping and rolling to get the smooth waves and page boy styling that was common in that period. Women didn’t have either the time or the money to be overly concerned with fashion as there was a World War taking place. During the nineteen forties hairstyles tended to last longer than a season, and for most women the pageboy styling took a lot of work.

Women were in the factories doing men’s jobs because men were at war. During the day when many women were working with heavy machinery the only safe hairstyle was pinned up and covered with a turban. Turbans became common among the women who worked in the munitions factories, while they were utilitarian in nature, it wasn’t long before stars like Heddy Lamarr were making the everyday turban into something jewelled and stylish.

One of the reasons that the nineteen forties pageboy was so popular was because many women tired of having their hair hidden from sight for most of the day and couldn’t wait to take off their turbans and let their hair swing freely in the evenings. Veronica Lake epitomised the pageboy look with her hair falling naturally over to one side and became a nineteen forties style icon.

Bingo Basics

posted by critic
file under Gambling

Bingo is a very popular game in the UK and is sometimes known as housey housey. The game can be played between players at home, between players in a bingo house with an official calling out the numbers, or even online nowadays. Bingo is a gambling game and its origin is unknown.

In bingo players have cards or tickets that are laid out in three lines of nine squares each, with each row containing five numbers and four blank spaces. Each column contains one, two or in some rare cases three numbers.

The first column contains any combination of the numbers one-nine, the second column from ten-nineteen, the third 20-29 and so on till the last column with numbers eighty-ninety. The caller calls out numbers and checks the winning tickets, the prize or prizes for each game are usually announced at the beginning, players either call out when they have a line of numbers, two lines, or all fifteen numbers which is a full house, which is where the name housey housey comes from.

The order varies from country to country; in the UK it is one line, 2 and then full house, in New Zealand it is quite common to claim for three lines. In the UK there is a National Bingo Game, where it is only a full house that wins.

Supplies for Your Office

If you work from home then you will need to keep stock of the stationery that you use in your home office. Don’t waste time going to the stationery store once a month when you can just as easily order your stationery online. Even the big names in stationery like Ryman’s have a website these days and if you order online then it saves you a trip to the store when you could be doing something more productive.

Keep a running list of the office supplies that you use on a regular basis so you don’t run the risk of running out of essential items like laser paper for your printer.

You should have a steady supply of paper clips and things like staples and rubbers; you will also need a good stock of pens and pencils in your stationery cupboard. As well as the laser paper that you need for your printer you should also buy some cheaper paper for note taking etc.

If your business involves photography then you will also want to order some photo quality paper. There is some great laser paper around now that gives much better colour resolution than ordinary photo paper.

Sex and The City

It was a little weird to see this name in a TV show, mostly because is one of the things that we don’t talk out loud and we don’t take it as a subject for a show, but against all the odds this show came into our lives to be remembered not only because of its nature but because it also has another passion and this is fashion. Maybe the first objective of this show wasn’t that but as the show progressed this was the main subject.

Sarah Jessica Parker is one of the most recognized in the show and maybe because it was the one that had the opportunity to have more changes in the entire show, she became in love with shoes, she worked for a magazine where she gave advices to women about men, but most of all she was the model for many women around the world.

Not a fan of this but anyway…pretty good second hand show for over 30’s single women :)

Do You Always Log Out?

posted by critic

When you are tired or just want to turn off your computer, do you always log out? , yes might sound weird but a question that we need to answer more often.

Sometimes you go to a public library or any other place where you can use a shared computer, and you are going to realize that, maybe the last person using the computer didn’t log out.

And what is the reason to be alarmed? People can be victims of identity theft or even account numbers, credit cards numbers and any other information that is valuable for you.

But not only for those type of information also it could be a problem for your Face book, Hi-5, and even your e-mail account, and this one is a little more serious because you may have information that not only concerns you but also friends and even family members.
