The military Physician Assistant program was first developed by the United States Air Force in 1971 under the direction of the Air Force Surgeon General, Lieutenant General Alonzo Towner at Sheppard Air Force Base School of Heath Care Sciences in Texas and was modeled after the program developed by Dr. Eugene Stead at Duke University.

The Interservice Physician Assistant Program (IPAP) has been in operation since May 1996. Prior to that time, the Navy, Army, and Air Force and ran their own similar, but separate programs. The IPAP is part of the Graduate School, AMEDDC&S Health Readiness Center of Excellence, Joint Base San Antonio, Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

10/23/2016 · Yes, you must already be in the military to apply for IPAP. Each component has specific requirements for applying. I can only speak to Air Force requirements. You must be on active duty as an officer or enlisted member with at least 2 years of service and less than 14 years of active service (the 14 years is waiverable).
